2009 Evergreen Golf Packages at Nipawin

At Evergreen you know you're in for a challenging round the moment you step foot on its 1st tee. Just shy of 600 yards, this very long and narrow hole will test your golfing prowess immediately. You must try to keep your drives both long and straight to avoid the beautiful northern forest that graces both sides of the 1st fairway. If you do end up in the trees don't worry, as they are more forgiving than they appear. In addition, silica sand hazards accent just about every hole, so you will want to play your shots carefully. A word of warning about the greens - while they do contain some gentle undulations, the rule of thumb is to allow for less break than appearances would indicate.

Evergreen is considered one of the most beautiful and picturesque courses in Saskatchewan and is consistently ranked in the Top 5. It’s profiled by SCORE Magazine in May 2001 in the article " A Special Place : There's Something Unique About Nipawin." The Western Golf Directory (2000) and Inside Golf Magazine (2000) have also rated the course as #2 in the province. It was flagged as an "Undiscovered Gem" in the Women Golfer Magazine in 1998 and one of Canada 's Top 100 Courses by Golf Ranking Magazine in 1998. www.nipawin.com

What’s your favourite course?

With 250 plus courses in Saskatchewan, it’s a very difficult choice. Each course offers something different and worthwhile otherwise they wouldn’t still be in business, right? But since you asked, my favourite is Long Creek Golf and Country in Avonlea, a challenging and scenic course that’s well-kept and friendly. It’s also within 45 minutes driving distance of Regina where I live.

Golfers choose their favourite course on a variety of factors - course conditions, championship caliber, accessibility, lodging, dining, instruction, non-golf activities like a spa, hospitality and value. It seems everyone has a different favourite course - check out Hole #14 Course Reviews. During the summer, course reviews are also printed monthly in saskgolfer.com during the summer.

What’s the best deal for the money in Saskatchewan?

Fortunately, golf is still an affordable sport in Saskatchewan so there are lots of great deals. Compared to British Columbia, Alberta and other provinces, green fees are inexpensive and the quality of golf experience is high.

Budget a problem? There are about 60 courses in the province that still use sand greens - many are converting to grass greens - which are very inexpensive and run on the honour system.

A couple of other ways to cut down on costs: If you’re a RCGA member at a club, you’re given discounts at various courses in the province. Another way to cut down on expenses (and contribute to a worthwhile charity while you’re at it) is to a Golf Guide from the Saskatchewan Lung Association. Every year they publish a booklet that gives deals on over 100 courses in the province.

I’m an avid golfer, married with kids? What’s the best place for me totake my family on vacation where everyone can be happy?

Another tough call, but here’s a couple of suggestions - Moose Mountain Provincial Park in the southeast and Prince Albert National Park in the north.

Moose Mountain Provincial Park gets the most visitors of any provincial park. There’s a full range of services and activities, camping, hiking, waterslides, canoeing, dancehalls - you name it. There are also two excellent courses nearby at Golf Kenosee and White Bear Lake Golf Resort, and a fine course in Carlyle.

Saskatchewan’s favourite national park at Waskesiu also offers a variety of family activities, accommodation and wonderful golf courses. Waskesiu Lake Golf  Course has a national reputation so book early. Elk Ridge Resort, on the edge of the park, is one of the finest golf resort complexes in the province.

What’s the next golf hotspot?

The golf courses along Lake Diefenbaker offer one of the most unique golf experiences in the province. It’s within easy driving distance from Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Regina and other urban centers. Both the 18-hole Harbor Golf Course and Resort on the lakeside at Elbow and the 9-hole, Arizona-style Riverbreaks Golf Resort at Riverhurst are dandy golf courses for novices and scratch handicappers alike. Another course is in the early planning stages that will eventually provide a critical mass with three options out at the Lake Diefenbaker hotspot.

I’m a woman who’s seriously taking up the game. What’s the best place for me to get started?

Choose the course where your friends are playing. It’s unlikely you want to fashion a pro career so play where you can have fun and enjoy the game the most. Another consideration may be playing time and women’s nights. Some shorter executive courses cater especially to beginners, seniors and women players. Some courses have more active women’s nights and tournaments that may be more appealing to a novice.

We just won a lottery so money is no object. We want an exclusive golf experience where everything, meals, accommodation, service and golf are top of the line. Suggestions?

One of the best-kept secrets in Saskatchewan is the Good Spirit Lake Golf and Country Club north of Yorkton and near Canora. The complex includes excellent condos, hotel, clubhouse, and an RV spot. There’s a sauna, pool and fireplaces in the main complex. The meals and buffets are good, and service friendly. The 18-hole golf course was carved out of the trees and gives it’s share of thrills and spills on the greens and water holes. Everything is well maintained. The experience is exclusive, but the cost isn’t.

Elk Ridge Resort has also quickly established itself as one of the premier golf resorts in the province. Its popularity has resulted in an additional nine holes being added to the 18 championship holes already in play. The clubhouse, accommodation, meals and hospitality are to die for. A quick peak at their virtual Web site at www.elkridgeresort.com - one of the best Saskatchewan - shows you what you’re missing.

Are there any shoulder season packages in the spring and fall that are good deals?

Several of the golf courses flag the shoulder season deals on this Web site. Other clubs note them on their Web site. Considering the unpredictable weather in Saskatchewan, you may want to choose a course located where there are other  activities like swimming or hiking. It’s well worth shopping around for shoulder season deals - more moderate weather and fewer crowds and better deals.

How do you go about getting a tee time at theRoyal Regina Golf and Country Club, the oldest golf course in Saskatchewan?

Everyone has to play the home of golf in Saskatchewan at least once. The Royal Regina was founded in 1899 and still offers a fine golfing experience. The new clubhouse opened in 2001 and is worth a visit.

The public may tee off between dawn and 11.30 a.m. Monday to Thursday. Tee times may be booked at the Pro Shop, 924-8680.

In today’s marketplace, is it better to go to a self-contained resort, or is it wiser to book into a hotel or motel and play a la carte at a daily fee course?

Both can be attractive options. A self-contained resort offers the convenience of a golf course at your doorstep, a package price deal that may be attractive, and likely other amenities. A la carte gives you the variety of playing at several courses and something different in your after-golf hours. The motel or hotel may be more handy to certain amenities and services.

How in the world did you get a job like that and what’s your handicap anyway?

My wife and I enjoy traveling and golfing, so what better way to have an excuse to do more of both. I like to shoot in the 70s - any hotter than that and I like to stay in the bar. My best shots are my practice swing and conceded putts. What do I like about golf - well, it ain’t the low scores.
