Winter golf in British Columbia magnet
for Saskatchewan golfers

by Bryan Outram, Golf Writer

The time has come to recognize Vancouver Island, our West Coast paradise for what it truly represents and that is one of the most outstanding golf destinations anywhere in the world. More and more golfers are recognizing the quantity and quality of courses available here. To enhance the tee-up possibilities even more, the golf community on the Island has been working extremely hard to accommodate the travelling golfer with great packages.

There are few places on earth where one can find such finely manicured, well-designed golf courses that so elegantly showcase Mother Nature. This exquisite combination makes Vancouver Island a golf destination not to be missed. Add in the opening of the spectacular new Nicklaus designed Bear Mountain course in Victoria this summer and golfers can play fabulous layouts from one end of the island to the other.

Victoria & Area Bear Mountain G&CC

The summer of 2003 has seen the rich tradition and history of golf in the Victoria area added to with the opening of Bear Mountain G&CC. This highly anticipated layout is the first course in the world to be co-designed by Jack and Steve Nicklaus. Playing through stately forests, over mountainous terrain and above the deep-blue waters of the Juan De Fuca Strait, Bear Mountain will combine Nicklaus design with breathtaking scenery. A perfect example of the Bear Mountain experience is the dogleg-right, par five 14th hole. At 523 yards from the black tees and only 488 from the white, the 14th sounds reachable for the big hitters. Beware, however, the final 200 yards are all uphill and the elevated green is fronted by a ravine and some deep bunkers making the attacking the pin on your second shot a risky proposition. Anything even remotely long is apt to roll off the back and out of bounds. Your reward once you do arrive at the green is a spectacular 180-degree view of Victoria. Course Architect: Jack Nicklaus; Course Yardage: 5,001-7,116; Par: 70/71, not yet rated

Cordova Bay GC - Ridge and Bay Courses Gorgeous views abound on the Bay course and with four sets of tees Cordova Bay can accommodate all levels of players. This well conditioned layout has also been host to the Payless Open on a number of occasions. Opened in 1999, the 9-hole par 3 Ridge Course has similar features and matches the quality of the 18-hole championship course, both of which were designed by well-known golf course architect Bill Robinson. Adjacent to the par 3 course lies a unique, 18-hole Grass Putting Course featuring beautifully manicured undulating greens covering 40,000 square feet.

Glen Meadows G&CC

Located just minutes from the Schwartz Bay ferry terminal this mature course features majestic Garry Oaks. Having hosted the B.C. Open, Victoria Open and Canadian Tour Qualifying, the course boasts four sets of tees and stretches to over 6800 yards to challenge experienced players but at the same time is also very accommodating for those who are less skillful. A true country club, Glen Meadows also features 6 sheets of curling ice and 3 night-lit tennis courts. It may be of interest also to Martha Burk and Hootie Johnson that in 1970 Glen Meadows was the first club in BC to entitle women full privileges and equal membership.

Gorge Vale GC

First opened for play on November 1, 1930, Gorge Vale has a long tradition as one of the best layouts in Victoria. Over the last two years this venerable track has rebuilt 16 greens and added 5 ponds to a course previously devoid of water hazards. Now with four sets of tees on each hole, Gorge Vale plays to just over 6800 yards from the champs. This June 19-24th theyıll be hosting the renowned World Left-Handers Tournament no word yet on whether Mike Weir has entered (see course profile in this issue).
Par: 72; Course Yardage: 6,820

Cedar Hill Municipal

Located minutes north from downtown Victoria, Cedar Hill is a popular gem that can lay a strong claim to having the most rounds of golf played each year in Canada. Set amid many Garry Oaks, the course plays much tougher than its yardage with small tricky greens providing more challenge. A new clubhouse and course renovations a few years ago have only added to its allure. Tee times can be tough. Call ahead to ensure you can get on.
Par: 67; Course Yardage: 4949

Olympic View GC

With waterfalls, lakes, incredible views of the Olympic Mountains and a serene park-like setting, Olympic View is easily one of the prettiest courses you will ever play. Don't be taken in though; the course's beauty belies a test of the game. Its design meanders around rock bluffs, past lakes and through lush coastal forests. Possibly the most distinctive hole is its phenomenal finisher. With three dramatic changes in elevations, seemingly routine shots become anything but. Moderate hitters should play conservatively but big hitters may want to gamble Š Pull out the big stick and carry your ball over the rock outcropping at the top of the hill 240 yards out. If successful your ball will land on the down slope and roll to the perfect landing area almost 300 yards off the tee and 215 yards short of the green. From there it's a controlled iron or fairway wood to a 3-tiered, elevated green fronting the clubhouse. Birdie is a great score here but eagle is legendary. See if you can match what Tiger did when he played Olympic View in CE94:
Driver, 5-iron, one-putt.

Royal Colwood GC

Royal Colwood is a traditional style parklands championship course set amongst 450 year old Douglas Firs and majestic Garry Oaks. A true ³Royal², Colwood received its designation from King George V in 1931. Originally laid out in 1913, Royal Colwood has remained basically the same since. The course architect, Vernon Macan apparently did his job rather well. One change for 2003 is the addition of forward tees, making 4 sets available. While challenging, it is an easy walk and members, young and old, still predominantly prefer to enjoy their course on foot. Royal Colwood is set to host the Canadian Tourıs Victoria Open this July, an event to be televised worldwide by the Golf Channel.
Designer: AV Macan; Par: 70; Course Yardage: 6,678

Uplands GC

In the early 1900s, local Victoria players decided to expand by moving beyond the rough 9-hole course a few miles to the west of the cityıs harbour. They chose the present Uplands site, high above the city, for its outstanding natural beauty and its potential for great golf. In 1922 the Uplands Club opened for play. The #1 stroke hole represents much of what gives Uplands its teeth: a 434 yard long straightaway par 4 which has grown into a slight dogleg. Two massive Oaks and contour mowing make a left to right tee shot the best play. The relatively flat green has been made most tricky and unusual by two humps which run the width about 30 feet apart.

Victoria Golf Club

Established in 1893, Victoria GC is the oldest club in Canada on its original site. On the most southerly tip of Vancouver Island, facing the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the course is 100 acres of beautiful seaside property in the Municipality of Oak Bay. The Clubhouse of 35,000 square feet was completely renovated and updated in 1993. With Victoriaıs mild weather, it is open all year round to members, guests and, generally, members of other private clubs.
Designer AV Macan; Par: 70; Course Yardage: 6,015

Prospect Lake GC

This pristine 9-hole course is nestled on the waterıs edge of Prospect Lake. The par 32 consists of five par 4ıs and four par 3ıs. With $250,000 worth of renovations, the course has a new halfway house, enclosed terrace seating area and improvements to five holes. The signature 6th hole is a 130-yard carry over the lake from a raised rock teeing area. A floating walkway takes you to the green. These unspoiled surroundings and wild life are just 15 minutes from Downtown Victoria.
Par: 32; Course Yardage: 1,985; Slope: 102; Rating: 58.7

Cowichan Valley Arbutus Ridge G&CC

Overlooking the southern Gulf Islands, Arbutus Ridge is a beautiful course that pleases the eye at the same time as offering a true test of golf. Between the precision requirements of Arbutus' opener to the demands of its famous 18th, you will find fantastic variety that makes this course a must play. With four sets of tees, Arbutus Ridge offers golfers of all levels a fair challenge. Novices will appreciate the forward tee positions that make good scores a realistic goal while experienced players will revel in the opportunity to test their golfing metal against some of the island's best holes. Arbutus Ridge recently completed floor to ceiling clubhouse renos and soon will open a state-of-the-art golf academy. Also, Arbutus will be host to the B.C. Jr Ladies Championship this summer.
Architect: Bill Robinson; Ydg: 5,535 - 6,168; Par: 70

Cowichan G&CC

Located near the city of Duncan, Cowichan's challenge lies mainly in its tricky landing areas and demanding tee shots. The original nine was laid out in 1947 by A.V. McCann and the newer nine in 1985 (designed by member Ken Worthington). Towering trees and rolling hills mean that golfers must plan their strategy well. Get too aggressive and you may end up with a downhill lie, too conservative and you could face a blind up-hill approach shot. Left or right - you will be punching out of the woods - scrambling to save par. A perfect example is the daunting 10th. A 411 yard, downhill dogleg left, it dares you to cut the corner and attack the pin with a short iron. Be sure you place your tee shot perfectly though. Miss too far right and you will have to hit a controlled fade with a mid or long iron to a green you can't see. Miss too far left and you will be playing a punch shot from under the trees. Land anywhere but below the hole and you will be facing a deceptively breaking putt that has left more than a few people scratching their heads on the way to the next tee. The course also features views of

Cowichan Bay and the surrounding mountains.

Duncan Meadows G&CC

Resting in the shadow of Mt. Prevost is a golfing gem that has been labeled as one of the top-ten most underrated courses in all of Canada. A great blend of parkland and links style holes, Duncan Meadows tantalizes golfers with a fantastic blend of risk and reward choices. Big hitters have plenty of opportunities to work out their driver but must match their power with short game finesse if they are going to successfully attack the tricky and well-guarded greens. A great example of Duncan Meadowsı risk-reward is its memorable 17th. At 491 yards, the tees are elevated and big-hitters are given an opening to try and cut the corner and go for the green in two. Hit a solid driver with a controlled fade that cuts the corner and you can find yourself 180 yards away with only lake between you and the green. Miss left off the tee, though, and your added distance will take you through the dogleg into jail; miss right and spend 5 minutes in the forest looking for a ball you probably wonıt find. Whether hitting your 2nd or 3rd (or even 4th) shot on the approach, bunkers, trees, sand and O.B. encroach dangerously near this 2-tiered green.
Course Architect: Claude Muret; Course Yardage: 5,356-6,616; Par: 70/71, Rating 71.8, Slope: 129

Cottonwood GC

Designed, built and operated by the Kaese family, Cottonwoodıs 18 holes are both entertaining and challenging. Hitting it straight is of utmost importance here, donıt be fooled by the lack of length as strategic hazards, OB, narrow fairways and table-top fast greens will keep you on your toes. The 15th is the signature; a 475 yard par 5, itıs straight away with water left, OB right, and a creek running in front of a 30ı elevated green. There is no room for error, you must hit a high approach to have the ball stick on the green.
Par: 72; Course Yardage: 6,215

Mt. Brenton GC

Located in charming Chemainus (browse the antique stores and view the murals), and open year round, this scenic, challenging par 71 course features tree-lined fairways, creeks, ponds and spectacular greens. The 434 yard 18th hole is the signature hole. This dog-leg right demands a well-positioned drive and a an approach shot over water in front of the well-guarded green. A great finishing hole.
Course Yardage: 5800; Par: 71, Rating 67.7, Slope: 116

March Meadows GC

March Meadows is located in beautiful Honeymoon Bay near the south shore of Cowichan Lake. The Lake is the gateway to the West Coast of central Vancouver Island, only 50 kms north of Victoria, and 30 minutes west of the city of Duncan via Highway 18. Originally completed in 1971 , it has both a very challenging 9 hole regulation course comprising 3,259 yards and a driving range. The Clubhouse consists of a full service, licensed restaurant with a covered exterior deck area overlooking the 1st Hole. Honeymoon Bay is also the home of Dawn Coe-Jones, one of Canada's brightest stars on the LPGA Tour. Dawn grew up in this community and honed her skills on March Meadows; she still lives in Honeymoon Bay in the off season.

Nanaimo / Parksville Nanaimo G&CC

In the city of the same name, this majestic course is located on a ridge above Departure Bay where tall evergreens, willow and maple trees frame picture perfect views of the Strait of Georgia and the Gulf Islands. Flower gardens on almost every hole add colour and in the distance the mainlandıs Coast Mountains serve as a backdrop to this stunning scene. At 6,700 yards, the course is a test for low handicap golfers who must produce long straight drives to reach the greens in regulation. Four sets of tees allow middle and high handicap players to find a level of play suited to their game. To score well, players must keep their ball out of the trees lining the fairways. Also, the playerıs A-game should include a keen eye and a solid putting stroke to negotiate the large, fast, often undulating greens of this challenging track. As an added bonus, the area enjoys Canadaıs mildest climate. This, plus superb design and drainage, has earned Nanaimo a reputation as one the best all-season courses on the Island.
Course Designer: A.V. Macan; Course Yardage: 5,648 - 6,667; Par: 72, Rating 71.9, Slope 129

Fairwinds G&CC

With ocean and mountain views, this magnificent 6,200 yard, par-71 course will challenge and please experienced and novice players alike. Towering Douglas fir, Arbutus and Garry Oak trees line lush fairways. Water is in play on 11 holes while over 70 sandtraps guard immaculate greens. One of its best holes is also its last. The 518 yard, par five 18th is the key to bragging rights at the popular 19th hole. With woods left and water down the entire right hand side, a solid, straight tee shot is all-important. Well-placed bunkers at 100 and 50 yards short of the green mean that the second shot must be even more accurate than the first. Birdies on this hole will come thanks to your pitching game. For those who wish to improve their game, there are full practice facilities, including a driving range. Located at Nanoose Bay, 30 minutes north of the Departure Bay ferry terminal in Nanaimo, turn off the highway and follow the signs to find Fairwinds, the 1999 BC PGA Facility of the Year.

Winchelsea View GC

Views of the Strait of Georgia and the Coastal Mountains make Winchelsea View an attractive 18-hole course that offers something for players of all abilities. Its friendly atmosphere, reasonable green fee rates and convenient location have helped make it a popular favourite among many local golfers. Overall, Winchelsea View has a mostly forgiving layout over its 4322 yards, which allows golfers a little bit of latitude in the placement of their shots. However, this does not mean you can throw caution to the wind, as many of Winchelsea View's contoured fairways challenge the golfer with deceptive slopes and strategically placed hazards.

Glengarry Golf Links

Within minutes of the sand and surf of enchanting Qualicum Beach, Glengarry Golf Links offers, in effect, a variety of two courses in one. Links style holes meander through open meadow on the front side, with spectacular Mount Arrowsmith in the background, while much of the back nine winds its way between and around dense woods, with an environmentally protected forest as a centrepiece. All the amenities that golfers would expect to find at the best of resorts are available at Glengarry; from full sets of rental clubs to power carts. The front nine has recently been remodeled and renovations on the back nine should be finished later this year. This is turning Glengarry into a 6500 yard championship layout that puts a premium on accuracy and choosing the right tees for your ability. Also, a spacious double-ended grass tee practice range is nearing completion and Premier Golf Academy golf schools will be conducted regularly at the practice facilities starting this summer.
Yardage: 4,161 - 6500; Par: 72

Qualicum Beach Memorial

The fourth oldest course in BC, the historic Qualicum Beach is a beautiful 9-hole course with breathtaking ocean views. But youıd best be keeping your mind on the golf as most fairways are treelined and the mature greens can be quite fast! Built in 1913, the course is a very challenging par 35, 2,560 yards and has undergone some upgrades over the past few years. Described as narrow and challenging, the course is open to the public every day. Amenities include a pro shop, clubhouse restaurant, rentals and putting green.
Par 35; Yardage 5601; Rating 67.7; Slope 111

Morningstar GC

Host to the Canadian Tour Qualifying School for six years and one of the most popular courses on the Island, Morningstar International is the gem of the central Island. Utilizing rolling terrain, and water as its main defenses, Morningstar starts you out in open meadow and then takes you quickly into an evergreen forest. Getting off to a good start is key if you want to have a good round at this challenging course. Perhaps no hole better signifies the fantastic brand of golf that Morningstar features than its par four 12th. At just over four hundred yards from the back tees and 321 from the red, it offers plenty of yardage to challenge the average golfer. Add to that fact that it is a downhill fairway with a sharp dogleg right and you will begin to see the challenge that the hole offers. The best strategy is to hit up the right middle of the fairway to your favourite yardage and then hit the highest lofted club you can hit from there to ensure that the ball stops on the firm, sloping green. Any balls that are short will find themselves in the deep bunker that fronts the entire green and challenges you to save par. At over 7000 yards from the tournament tees, with a slope of 139, Morningstar has all the challenge any rational advanced golfer could want. The course is far more manageable and becomes downright friendly from the more forward tees.
Designer: Les Furber; Ydg: 5,882 - 7,018; Par: 72, Rtg 72.1, Slope 139

Eaglecrest GC

Located between the Island Highway and the Straits of Georgia , Eaglecrest is partnered with Morningstar under the Eaglestar name. Starting at the rustic log clubhouse, the golf course meanders through the Eaglecrest and Oceanside waterfront subdivisions. To ensure you enjoy the ultimate golfing experience, customer service and golf course maintenance are given top priority by a team of experts. The ancillary facilities include a covered range, putting green, practice sand trap, pitching/chipping area, and clubhouse containing a Pro Shop, restaurant, lounge, banquet hall and locker rooms.
Ydg: 6313; Par: 71, Rtg 70.8, Slope 126

Arrowsmith G&CC

Arrowsmith, the only course right in Lighthouse Country, is par-61, beautifully manicured with a driving range, a practice bunker, two practice greens and a full-service clubhouse. With a mix of two par 5 holes, three par 4s, 13 par 3s and large, undulating greens, this track presents an enjoyable challenge with scenic glimpses of Mount Arrowsmith and Echo Valley. This is an extremely challenging executive course and the most popular in the area. Every fairway is rolling and lined with tall, stately evergreen trees. The signature hole is # 12, a 170-yard, par 3 which features an elevated tee that sits forty feet above the green and offers a spectacular view of Mt. Arrowsmith. A continuous ribbon of cart paths allow year-round use of power carts.
Par: 61; Course Yardage: 3,724

Comox/Courtenay, Campbell River & North Island Crown Isle Resort

Completed in 1996, Crown Isle's 47,000 sq ft clubhouse tells you all you need to know about this incredible golfing facility. With two restaurants, a huge patio, snack bar, meeting rooms, pro-shop, cigar lounge, poker room, private classic car museum, sweeping double staircase and indoor waterfall, it instantly tells you that you have arrived at a world class resort. Perhaps the only thing that can out-do the clubhouse is the golf course itself. Designed by Graham Cooke, this 7,024 yard championship course will call on every shot in your bag to negotiate the sixty-eight bunkers and nine water hazards that defend this golfing jewel. Don't worry if you are not a Tiger or Annika, wide fairways and generous, manicured greens mean that shooting low scores is possible. A great example of Crown Isle golf is its par 5, fifth hole. At 502 yards from the back tees and a friendly 404 from the front, it is a short par five that tempts many people into thinking they can shoot low on this hole. There is only one small catch. The hole is a gentle dogleg right and the entire right side of the fairway is bordered by a water hazard. The best strategy is to be aggressive up the left side of the fairway on your drive and then let ego and ability wrestle with the idea of going for the green in two.
Course Architect: Graham Cooke; Course Yardage: 5,169-7,024; Par: 72 Rating:74.2 Slope: 133

Comox GC

Right in town, Comox is one the most challenging 9-holers in the province. Views of the Strait of Georgia backdrop many holes while mature trees frame virtually every fairway. The historic clubhouse is a great place to stop and chat with the local members.
Yardage: 2700; Par: 35 Rating: 65.7; Slope: 114

Sunnydale G&CC

Sunnydale is located just 5 minutes north of Courtenay. A beautiful 18 holer, it offers majestic scenery and a moderate challenge for all levels of players. Their renovated clubhouse features a restaurant, lounge and patio. The course itself offers a good range of challenges as water hazards, sand bunkers, rough and trees keep it interesting. This friendly club is open from dawn to dusk and itıs always easy to hook up with a local member.
Yardage: 5952; Par: 71 Rating: 67.9; Slope: 112

Longlands GCM

Located just minutes north from the centre of Comox is the par 3 layout, Longlands. Great for tuning up your short game, itıs also excellent for those less experienced players. Set in mature trees, Longlands is a local favourite. This is one of those par-3 layouts that is as pretty as it is challenging.
Par: 27; Course Yardage: 2,222

Glacier Greens GC

Set on the Comox military airport, Glacier Greens is a favourite of residents and visitors alike. As the name implies, the putting surfaces here can be quite fast, but it also refers to the glacier that provides a memorable backdrop for many of your shots. Expanded to 18 holes a few years ago, Glacier Greens will be hosting the B.C. Seniors Tournament August 11-13 this year and will be guaranteed to be a demanding test.
Architect: Doug McArthur; Course Yardage: 6,362; Par: 72

Storey Creek GC

Storey Creek,14 kms south of Campbell River, is widely publicized as "a course in nature". Carved out of dense coniferous and deciduous forest with creeks meandering along, and across, fairways, it flourishes as a sanctuary for many species of flora and fauna. Each fairway is enclosed in forest giving a sense of solitude and tranquillity. Of the eighteen holes there are five par 3s, five par 5s and eight par 4s, a little different than the traditional make-up of a par 72. No hole represents this layout better than the par five 12th. 479 yards from the front tees to a daunting 561 yards from the champs, this hole rewards power to get on the green easily in regulation, but it demands accuracy to avoid trouble. Itıs a sharp dogleg right with the entire right half of the fairway being replaced by a water hazard. Hit the ball too far to the left and you will end up in the trees. If you do get past the water with your first two shots, you will be left with an uphill approach shot to a well defended green. Par here is something to brag about. Storey Creek is proud to have hosted the Œ99 BC Men's Amateur and the Œ02 BCPGA Pro-Assistants, and will be hosting the Œ03 BC Men's Mid Amateur in June.
Architect: Les Furber; Ydg: 5,896 - 6,699; Par: 72, Rtg 73.1, Slope: 133

Sequoia Springs GC

This challenging 18-hole par 70 course with its gardens and lush fairways is minutes from downtown Campbell River. And the owner has plans for expansion with Patio homes expected in July of this year and a lengthening to 6400 yards in 2004. Relax after your game on the sunny garden patio or in the Sand Trap Lounge. Four large banquet rooms make it a popular choice for weddings and special events.

Seven Hills G&CC

Located in the beautiful rugged north island setting of Port Hardy, Seven Hills offers nine unique and challenging golf holes. Golfers of all abilities will be tested on the large, undulating greens and winding fairways. This beautiful inland layout uses the contour of the land to help guide the player along. It also offers subtle elevation changes adding to the experience.
Yardage 3100; Par 35; Slope130; Rating 69.7

Port Alberni/Long Beach Alberni GC

Originally opened with 9 holes in 1928 against the backdrop of Mt Arrowsmith and Beaufort Mountain Range, in 1991, Alberni increased to 18 holes, now measuring 6156 yards from the back tees. Over the last couple of years the club has also added two more reservoirs for additional irrigation needs. Combined with extensive drainage work, the course has now dramatically improved its year-round playability. Bordered by towering trees and following the contours of Cherry Creek, the course is considered by many of its regulars to be a "small paradise." A salmon bearing stream meanders through the course coming into play on several holes. Its sand base greens drain well and contain gentle slopes and undulations that make them difficult to read. Alberni's signature hole is its 8th. At 393 yards this tight hole has a large water hazard to the right of the fairway and Cherry Creek meandering by the front of the green. Golfers are advised to keep their tee-shots left to survive this hole intact. The clubhouse has significantly upgraded its kitchen facility and renovated the lounge. Among the tournaments they are hosting this year are the Menıs & Ladies West Coast Amateurs in June and the Alberni Valley Charity Classic on July 12.
Par: 70 Rating: 69.4 Slope: 118; Course Yardage: 6156

Hollies Executive GC

Located on Highway #4, two kilometres past the tourist information centre on the way to Tofino, this executive layout is a fast playing, straight ahead course where the focus is firmly on fun. It boasts a breezy, natural setting with magnificent views and its laid back, friendly, atmosphere has made it a local favourite for company tournaments and social events. A level topography, generous fairways and sparse sprinkling of trees provides The Hollies with a forgiving layout that can be enjoyable for all golfers, especially beginners and average golfers who will have to work hard to find trouble during their rounds. The course's 1543 yards are divided up into three par fours, and six par threes, with the shortest hole measuring 116 yards. There is no sand to concern you, but the slow flowing Maebelle Creek provides hazard on six holes so you'll want to be careful with your shot placement when it is in play. Next time you're in the ³Port²and have a few hours to spare, make sure to take advantage of this terrific little course. You're always sure to receive a warm welcome and lack of an advanced tee time is never a problem.

Long Beach GC

The Long Beach Golf Course, located in the Clayoquot Biosphere Reserve, is one of the most scenically situated golf courses on the West Coast of Canada. As the home for the golfers among the many visitors to the quaint fishing villages of nearby Tofino and Ucluelet, the course is also only a few minutes away from one of the most spectacular beaches in the world: Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park. The course offers full services and facilities and is host to a variety of local events in these flourishing communities on this wild and rugged coast. The 9 hole championship course is also known to be one of the most challenging on Vancouver Island and is surrounded by the ancient rainforest of Clayoquot Sound to the north and the breathtaking beauty of Barkley Sound to the south. Because of the temperate climate of the west coast of Vancouver Island, the course is open year round. Sandy soil means that the course drains virtually instantly.
